The Gay Games

The Gay Games represent more than sports. The Gay games are a space where LGBTQ athletes compete without being afraid of intolerance.

The Games, founded in 1982 by Olympic decathlete Tom Waddell, was built on the principles of participation, inclusion and personal best. These values are at the heart the event.

Origins of Gay Games

San Francisco hosted the first Gay Games on 28 August, 1982. Tom Waddell was an Olympic decathlete, activist, and AIDS patient. He founded the Gay Games. He envisioned a competition where people from all sexualities would compete in an Olympic-style, without any particular political message. A total of 1,350 people took part in the Games, which were a success and set a precedent for future events.

Waddell banned medal tallies and medal ceremonies, as well as the recording of athletic records. He believed that the talent of athletes should not be pitted against others, but rather celebrated. He died of AIDS in 1988, but his legacy still lives on.

Now, every four years, athletes from all over the world meet for the quadrennial Gay Games. They participate in sports and cultural activities, while taking in the festival village at a supporting venue in the host city. This event demonstrates that the FGG values of participation, inclusion and personal excellence can inspire mainstream sport to be more inclusive.

The first Gay Games

Tom Waddell created the first Gay Games that were held in San Francisco in 1983. Waddell himself was a gay decathlete. He wanted to use the ethos of Olympic competitions to create an international LGBT sports event.

The Games generated feelings of achievement and joy among the participants. They were also a statement of strength against the AIDS crisis that had ravaged the community. Many athletes took part a Parade of Nations in which they wore a red shirt, symbolizing AIDS awareness.

The Games displayed courage and solidarity despite AIDS and encouraged LGBT clubs to flourish. The Games are held every four-years and continue to be a major event in the LGBTQ sports world. The organisers aim to eliminate all forms of sexism including racism, ageism & homophobia. Each host city adds its own style and flair to the Games.

The second Gay Games

The second Gay Games, held in Vancouver in 1990, were a huge success. They featured a wide range of sports and cultural activities, as well as a festival village. The games became a worldwide success as they expanded.

The Federation of Gay Games (FGG) aims to promote equality through sports and culture. Its principles are: Participation Inclusion and Personal Excellence. Its goal is to make every participant feel welcome, respected and safe during the Games. FGG encourages people with disabilities to join the Games.

Gender equality was a central goal of the first Gay Games, which were founded by Tom Waddell. Waddell, inspired by American athletes Tommie Smith & John Carlos from the 1968 Olympics hoped that these Games would inspire LGBTQ individuals to stand against intolerance. The Games have grown in size, but gender equality has not always taken priority.

The third Gay Games

The Gay Games aims to promote the concept of diversity through sports and culture. The Games welcome athletes of both genders and all ages regardless of sexuality, age, race, religion or ethnic origin.

The Games give LGBT sports stars a chance to shine in leagues for men who wouldn’t otherwise allow them to compete. The Games are a platform where same-sex figures skaters can wear matching denim jumpsuits to perform to the song “Hopelessly Devoted To You.” A trans basketball player from Uganda can also lead his team to success in a country where homosexuality is illegal.

There are many challenges to overcome as the Games evolve. The organizers of the 2023 Games — which was delayed an extra year because of a COVID related pandemic — have been forced to reduce the scale of the Games in order to draw participants. Valencia, Spain is also facing the same issues as it prepares to host the 2026 Games. The organizers want to bring the Games to prominence and in a sustainable manner.

The fourth Gay Games

The Gay Games has become a bigger, more diverse event than its first incarnation. The Gay Games is the largest cultural and sporting event in the world, organized by and for LGBT artists, athletes and other participants. It also serves as a platform that fosters community and activism within the LGBTQ community.

Contrary to the Olympics, everyone can compete in the Gay Games. Athletes need not be professional or skilled at their sport to compete. However, they must pay in order to compete. The activists are also encouraged to speak up against discrimination and to work towards making the world more accepting of LGBTQ people.
