Before The Storm captures the angst of teens and the queer romance that is prevalent in today’s world. Yang’s game explores homoeroticism without being too explicit. It uses the term “tearoom” to describe a gay scene.
Gone Home, which explores the internal and outer struggle of gender change has also had a major impact on gaming. It’s not only major studio games which explore these themes.

The freeware visual story Yearning: a Gay Story (or simply YAGS), is about a gay college freshman who has been kept secret. The player character must deal with the usual trials and tribulations of a new school year: meeting roommates, not flunking exams, making friends, coming out to family and old friends, and stomaching the horrible food on campus.
YAGS makes a great effort to show a realistic coming out experience. This includes the fear and reluctance that comes with it, as well as the potential negative consequences. The PC can either repeatedly refuse to tell Adam they are gay or finally admit it and face the possibility of him disowning you. The player can also back out of going to Queers & Allies group meetings, but eventually Janet forces them to go and they meet the members of the club (including everyone from Armoured Closet Gay Carlos to nerdy computer science students Hannah, Nikhil, and Jake).
Some of the characters in the game are based on real people. A Mass Effect crew member is one, as well as a Final Fantasy antagonist and an Overwatch girl. Each playthrough requires several hours of gameplay. It contains gay naughtiness and implied sexual content. An optional patch can be downloaded to remove the censorship from game text and graphics.

Thirsty Suitors, from Outerloop Games, is a Scott Pilgrim-esque adventure with a stylish and varied game play. The story is as beautiful as it is interesting for its queerness. Outerloop Games’ Scott Pilgrim -like adventure takes Jala back to her hometown where she finds her ex-boyfriends, gossipy relatives, and South Asian recipes. This bi-sexual adventure mixes skateboarding with turn-based battles, cooking, and RPGs.
Baldur’sgate 3 – Larian Studios’ epic Dungeons & Dragons game – is arguably one of the biggest hits of 2023. It has arguably the most extensive queer representation in any videogame. It’s not hard to understand why Baldur’s Gate 3 was Eurogamer 2023’s Game of the Year. The game features nonbinary and canon gay options, as well as a flexible quest structure.
Celeste, a charming, challenging platformer featuring a young, transgender girl who climbs a mountain, is a heartfelt exploration of mental health and depression. Other notable mentions include the cyberpunk bartending sim VA-11 Hall-A, which features many queer characters and even allows you to serve drinks that go against the customer’s desires to branch out the storyline in new directions.

Night in the Woods, a beautiful and eerie visual novel, is not your average visual novel. This is a narrative-driven game that puts emotion before following a linear story. Some might find the pacing slow or boring, but it’s a unique way to tell a story that will remain with you long after the credits roll.
This anthropomorphic cat adventure game follows Mae Borowski, a young college dropout who returns to her hometown of Possum Springs and is forced to confront her doting parents, the town’s burning out adults, and her millennial friends who are still trying to figure out their early 20’s. It is a funny, honest and harrowing look into the world from the perspective of someone who has no answers.
Night in the Woods’ dialogue is raw and emotional, giving characters a life-like feel. The art is stunning, and the music is fantastic. But the most important aspect of this game is the relationships between Mae and her friends. It’s obvious that the writers of this game wanted players to feel a genuine emotional connection with these characters. Even the most minor of interactions with these animals feels like a worthwhile experience. This game shows how your choices are only so effective when confronted with the systemic rot that is capitalism and the isolation in small towns.
